In Our Group with Hinkler Lions
of Bundaberg

The Hinkler Lions have been serving the community for over 50 years, Publicity Coordinator John Seymour has the details.

Tell us about the Hinkler Lions of Bundaberg?

We are a group that works to serve our community without any benefit to ourselves under the banner of Lions Clubs International.

Hinkler Lions help our community in a variety of ways, through volunteering at community events and in times of crisis in Bundaberg, and through fundraising to support the needy in the Bundaberg community.

Some of the activities include:
- Providing a shower trailer and laundry service for the homeless.
- Maintaining and harvesting the Gavin Street Community Garden, which is open to the public.
- Conducting fundraisers activities for many local groups and organisations.

What is the history of the club?

In 1970, a group of 20 local men joined together and formed a new Lion's Club to be known as the Lions Club of Bundaberg City.

Although it was thought to be a great idea at the time, it was soon found that the name was too close to the first club founded earlier, that of the Lions Club of Bundaberg.

It took some three years for the club to be named the Hinkler Lions Club Bundaberg by Clubs International in America.

A date was set for our Charter Night and the first problem that was encountered was that Bundaberg had no hall on the chosen night.

To assist us, Ald. Doug Rattray donated us the use of his Paramount Theatre.

We scrubbed and dusted, stacked old theatre chairs, installed suitable lighting and made a dance floor even though it consisted of a very uneven concrete slab.

It was an outstanding evening that will never be forgotten.

This was the start of a wonderful Club and we have never looked back.

Lions Clubs work according to their Code of Ethics and Purposes.

We welcome you to join our monthly meetings at the Sugarland Tavern Avoca Room. You can also contact us at bundaberghinkler.qld@lions.org.au

Why is the group important to the Bundaberg Region?

The Bundaberg Hinkler Lions group is important to the Bundaberg Region because it is a volunteer organisation that aims to serve the community, meet humanitarian needs and encourage peace and understanding.

The group has been active for over 50 years and has participated in various activities such as sponsoring the World Festival of Magic for disadvantaged children, supporting local schools and charities, and providing disaster relief.

Membership is open to all people in the community who share the Lions’ motto: "We Serve".

Members can either provide service or raise money for their community with 100% of funds donated by the public through fundraising directed to the project for which they are intended.
