Tell us about the Bundaberg Radio Yacht Club?

The Bundaberg Radio Yacht Club Inc. (BRYC) was formed in the late 1970s/early 1980s under the name Burnett Model Marine Club.

BRYC is affiliated with Queensland Radio Yacht Association, Australian Radio Yacht Association and Australian Sailing.

At present we have 29 members.

Club racing takes place on most Sundays at Lake Ellen, Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park, commencing at 12.30 pm.

I believe we provide an enjoyable sport and past time to people of all ages who like sailing.

What is the history of the club?

In the early 1980s the East Bundaberg Rotary Club developed a plan to build a man-made lake on the western side of Baldwin Swamp.

The Burnett Model Marine Club took an active interest in the development of the lake and so Lake Ellen was built and later handed over to the local Council as an area for use by the community.

In May 1989 the Burnett Model Marine Club became incorporated and in October 2008 changed its name to Bundaberg Radio Yacht Club Inc.

For a period after 2000 the club moved racing to the Bundaberg Botanical Gardens, however, has since returned racing to Lake Ellen.

During the years different classes of radio yachts were sailed by the club.

The club started with the Marblehead class and after several years moved to the EC12 class. Then followed a move back to Marblehead's and then onto International One Metre class.

Today the club races Dragonforce 65 radio-controlled yachts competitively.

Who can get involved?

The club is open to anyone who likes to sail without getting their feet wet.

Feel free to talk to us before buying a yacht to make sure you get the right one for you.

What events happen during the year?

Every year we hold an Anzac Day Challenge on the Sunday closest to Anzac Day.

This is a team racing event with special trophies presented to the winners on the day.

This day is a social event as well as racing with sausage sizzle and soft drinks provided to members.

In early December we hold our trophy presentation day where trophies are presented to the winners of the scratch racing and handicap racing held throughout the year.
