Find out more information, including closure dates and detour details Essential work on the Burnett River Bridge will protect a vital connection and keep the Bundaberg Region community moving safely into the future. Located on McLennan Drive in Wallaville, the bridge will be closed to all traffic while the project is underway. The closure is expected to last around eight weeks, starting from Thursday April 9th and finishing by late May 2026, weather permitting. The Bundaberg Regional Council project has been planned in response to important maintenance and repairs identified during inspections. Roads and Infrastructure (Rural) portfolio spokesperson Cr Bill Trevor said parts of the bridge had worn over time and now needed attention. “Council recognises the bridge is a key route for the local community, with up to 350 vehicles using it each day including a high number of heavy vehicles,” he said. “These works will strengthen the bridge and help make sure it remains safe and reliable for all.” For safety reasons, the bridge will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week during construction. Detours will be in place during the closure and include: Detour 1: Zillmann Road – Bruce Highway – McLennan Drive Detour 2: McLennan Drive – Bruce Highway – Zillmann Road Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. “We understand the closure will be inconvenient, particularly for local farmers and transport operators who often use this route,” Cr Trevor said. “By completing these repairs now we’re protecting this important crossing and reducing the risk of bigger issues down the track.” History of Burnett River Bridge The Burnett River Bridge has served the region for many decades. Known as the Old Wallaville Bridge, it was first built with a timber deck in the 1940s and later upgraded with a concrete deck in the late 1960s ⬇️
