Experience an unforgettable evening of art, conversation, music and a taste of Italy at the exclusive Artist Table event Australia: The Italian Experience.
Australia: The Italian Experience will immerse guests’ senses as they indulge in a delicious dinner taking in Italian history surrounded by images from Bundaberg photographer Sabrina Lauriston.
Entertainment for the artist table dinner evening will be provided by professional string quintet Bella Canna, with members composing an original score for the bespoke event.
Council’s Arts, Culture and Events portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said the evening would provide an insight into the personal experiences of Italians who immigrated to Australia between 1945 and 1970.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to take in the amazing stories behind the beautiful images captured by Sabrina,” he said.
“The exhibition offers an insight into the personal experiences of Italians who immigrated to Australia.”
Collating the information over a two-year period Sabrina and curator Trudie Leigo visited the homes of Italian immigrants in Bundaberg, Fremantle and Melbourne.
They interviewed and photographed individuals, who were mostly aged in their eighties or nineties, and had courageously left behind their country, which had been devastated by the Second World War, to pursue opportunity, work and a new life.
Sabrina has experienced firsthand the dislocation of culture, language and identity, after she migrated from Italy to Australia in 2007.
She wanted to undertake a creative project that would enable her to explore and honour those who had migrated before her.
She invited Trudie to collaborate with her and together they were welcomed into the homes of these men and women, whose lives have spanned some of the most significant events of the twentieth century.
