Hear stories about the events, places and people that have helped shape the town of Childers when historic walking and bus tours kick off in the region next month.
The tours are part of the annual Childers Festival program and will explore some of the monumental moments in the region’s history as well as the longstanding businesses and buildings which feature along the main street.
Local historian Scott Stedman will host the walking tours, to be held on Friday 23 July and Saturday 24 July at 9 am to 10.30 am.
“We will start off at Christ Church to view the beautiful stained-glass windows and the story of how they have been donated over the years,” he said.
“Then, the tour continues to Millennium Park where I will talk about the fire of 1902 as well as the The Palace Hostel backpacker fire in the year 2000.
“We will also delve into some of the history of the shops before heading into the Old Pharmacy Museum to find out how it originated.”
Scott said from the Kanaka Memorial to the Old Pharmacy, there were so many interesting aspects of the town, all with a story to tell.
“We have so much heritage and history in Childers, it is such an iconic town and this is just a little snapshot that I share,” he said.
