Bundaberg Region Mayor Jack Dempsey joined community leaders this week in congratulating the Royal Australian Air Force on its centenary.
Commemorations were held on Wednesday to mark 100 years since the RAAF was established in 1921.
The Queen attended a RAAF centenary memorial service overnight at Runnymede’s Air Force Memorial in the United Kingdom, which she opened in 1953.
Mayor Dempsey said the milestone was significant and unfortunately COVID-19 restrictions had limited commemorative events.
“Bundaberg had been earmarked as one of the places to host activities associated with this auspicious occasion,” he said.
“This reflects our historical and geographical importance.”
“Congratulations to the Royal Australian Air Force on its centenary,” Mayor Dempsey said.
“On behalf of the Bundaberg Region community, I take this opportunity to thank all current and former RAAF personnel for their contributions to keeping us safe.
“From modest beginnings in 1921, RAAF has grown into a potent, world-class Air Force which Australia relies on for security in times of conflict and peace.”
Bundaberg Airport was used as a training airfield by the RAAF from 1941 and No. 8 Service Flying Training School was based in Bundaberg from 1941-45.
In addition, various Reserve and Permanent Air Force squadrons operated from Bundaberg on coastal patrol and general reconnaissance tasks.Thank you to all those men and women of the RAAF.
