We take a look at some of the 2019 Anzac Day highlights with large attendances expected at services across the Bundaberg Region.
21-gun salute at Bucca
One Dawn Parade with a difference will be held at Bucca where the community will hold a special 21-gun salute.
This is to honour the approximately 70 volunteers from Bucca who served during World War I and II.
The Bucca service, which has been featuring the salute for the past four years, is unique to the Bundaberg Region and is believed to be the only live fire by non-military personnel in Australia.
Tomorrow’s commemoration will also include an honour board of First and Second World War local residents at the Bucca Community Hall. The Bucca Dawn Service begins at 4.20am with the parade to assemble at the Memorial Gardens and Plaque.
Even though weather conditions are expected to be mild, the message to stay hydrated and wear sun protection is being broadcast to those intending to participate in the many Civic Services commencing around 10am.
While Anzac Day is a time for reflection for all Australians, there are many special moments created for individuals in relation to Anzac Day and its observance locally.
Fred Bainbridge guest of honour
Second World War veteran Fred Bainbridge, 94, has been invited to take the salute at the Bundaberg Civic Service.
Fred is the special guest of honour at the ceremony and will lay a wreath from the citizens of the region before joining dignitaries on stage to take the salute.
Fred is one of several surviving World War II veterans expected to be at the service.
He served in New Guinea and captured some amazing images from his wartime experiences after taking his personal camera into active duty.
First woman to officiate
For Bundaberg RSL Sub-Branch president Helen Blackburn, Anzac Day 2019 will be the first time a woman officiates at the RSL Dawn Service in Bundaberg.
A returned servicewoman, Ms Blackburn said it was an incredible honour to continue a leadership role with the Bundaberg RSL sub-branch in its centenary year.
“This will be the 99th occasion that the Bundaberg RSL has participated in local Anzac Day observances and I am delighted to be a part of the rich history that surrounds our organisation and its dedicated members,” she said.
It’s also the 99th year the Caledonian Pipe Band will lead the Anzac Dawn Service.
