Turning lanes are proposed as part of an upgrade for the Goodwood/Lucketts Road intersection to safely facilitate traffic movements at the area popularly known as the “Doolbi Fiveways”.
Divisional representative and roads portfolio spokesman Cr Bill Trevor said that while improvements had been made at the intersection, residents remained concerned with the uncertainty the intersection still created for some motorists.
“Council has been fortunate to secure $640,000 from the Federal Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP) which represents half the estimated costs of undertaking the new remedial work. Council will fund the remaining 50 percent,” he said.
“The intersection located near the Isis Golf Course services traffic exiting Goodwood Road on to Lucketts, Station and Mamminos Roads.
“Under the proposed redesign, the existing 5-ways intersection will be reconfigured to form three T-junction intersections.
“The design calls for dedicated right and left-hand turning lanes to be constructed from Goodwood Road to service entry on to Lucketts Road. Entry to Station and Mamminos Roads would then be via Lucketts Road,” Cr Trevor said.
“Through traffic on Goodwood Road would continue unimpeded due to the turning lanes.”
The proposed redesign delivers a safer option for motorists as it provides clearer sight lines and compensates for driver reaction time.
“The roads around this intersection are also used for heavy transport and the improved design can cater to those vehicles which are required to facilitate transport to the region’s agricultural sector,” Cr Trevor said.
All work at the Doolbi Fiveways can be undertaken within existing road reserves.
Additional lighting and drainage upgrades are expected to be installed as part of the project.
The proposal will proceed to final design with work anticipated to commence in the first quarter of 2021.
Cr Trevor said transport opportunities and road safety were being enhanced in the Bundaberg Region through the delivery of the Federal Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
“Three projects under this program have recently been announced in our region,” he said.
