Bundaberg Pottery Group members were able to create artwork and pieces at home during the COVID-19 regulations, but the members are excited to once again return to the Walker Street pottery club after months of absence.

Bundaberg Pottery Group Association is firing along again with eager potters returning to the Walker Street pottery club after months of absence.

Bundaberg Pottery Group secretary Jan Usher said the pottery group reopened their doors last week with new opening days to accommodate members with the COVID-19 regulations.

She said there was more to the pottery group than just throwing bowls or creating sculptures, as it was the social side members enjoyed most, and they were excited to be slowly returning to normal.

“A lot of our members were able to keep potting at home during the closure, and we were sort of like a drop-in business where people could drop off their works for firing; but we are glad to be returning to a little bit of normal now,” Jan said.

“We don’t want to lose the social side of it all. The members who have returned so far are excited to be chatting away and exchanging information.

“We’ve reopened with more days now to allow for social distancing to ensure members can all come along.

“Our normal days were Thursday and Saturday, and now we are open Fridays as well – but we are limited to 10 people at a time, so bookings are important.”

Bundaberg Pottery Group Association vice-president Janet Usher says everyone is welcome to join the local group.

Jan said although the Bundaberg Pottery Group Association doors were now open, the pottery classes had not restarted, as she said it was too difficult for tutors to maintain social distance while teaching the hands-on lessons.

“We aren’t having the classes just yet, as it’s too hard to stay far enough apart,” she said.

“Things are a little different now, it doesn’t feel the same or as free as we once were – it is difficult to be distant- it’s not our Australian way. But we are glad to be slowly returning and we will keep soldiering on.”
