Junior Turtle Ranger and St Luke’s Anglican School student Will Gregson-Allcott has created a short video to show his passion for turtle conservation.
The Year 8 student said he created the short video highlighting a turtle’s lifecycle for a school assignment by using long stop animation.
The short video has since been shared on a number of local Facebook pages including Sea Turtle Alliance, which was created to promote the marine life and natural environment along the Bundaberg Region’s coastline.
Will said there was more than 350 photos used to create the entire turtle conservation video and he completed it during home learning during the COVID-19 restrictions.
“I made the video for a school assignment. We had to make a one minute long stop animation video for multimedia arts,” Will said.
“It took me two days to take the photos and a week of lessons to complete the editing.
“I found pictures and printed them out and then cut them out. I think it was about 366 photos to make the whole video.
“I had to do it at home because it was during the lock down period.”
Will has been a Junior Turtle Ranger for the past three seasons at Mon Repos and says he enjoys all aspects of helping the local marine life.
“As a junior ranger I patrol the beach with the rangers looking for turtles and help with turtle research and visitor groups,” he said.
“So, I get to measure the turtles, check for damage, help relocate eggs, read tag numbers and talk to visitors.
“I think it’s important to spread the turtle message so more people know that they shouldn’t litter, and they should reduce their glow.
“And they should care more about them because they are an endangered species.”

The 13-year-old said his favourite thing about being a junior sea turtle ranger was watching the newly hatched baby turtles take their first steps as they made their way to the ocean.
“My favourite thing about sea turtles is probably the little baby hatchlings running to the water,” he said.
Will hopes to be more involved in sea turtle conservation when he grows up.
