A new Rotary club has been formed by the amalgamation of the Bundaberg East and Bundaberg West clubs and has been named Rotary Club of Bundaberg Central.
President Andrew Bull said that Bundaberg East and West clubs decided to amalgamate due to dwindling numbers in both clubs.
“With people being more time poor than ever the overall proficiency of the clubs as separate entities meant less could be ultimately achieved,” Andrew said.
“The amalgamation has meant more flexibility and a greater membership base from which to draw participants from for a variety of projects.
“The Rotary Club of Bundaberg Central will build a greater community presence through the continuation of successful projects.
“These include back packs for the men’s shelter, antique fairs, book sales, bursaries and the Brian Prince Awards.
“The long term international project of providing support to the installation of water wells in Cambodia is also still very much alive.”
Though COVID-19 restrictions have meant that they can’t hold their traditional dinner meetings, the club is growing.
Four new members were recently inducted online, which brings the membership total to over 40.
Meetings being held via Zoom
The new club has been holding their meetings via Zoom, which has proven to be very successful.
Public Image director Yvonne Cunningham, newly arrived from Taieri Rotary in New Zealand, said the online format was working well.
“Zoom meetings are held every Monday fortnight and last Monday 34 members and 2 guests tuned in for a lively and interesting meeting,” Yvonne said.
“Guest speaker Steph McKenzie from RACQ LifeFlight Rescue presented an overview of the contribution that they make to the community, complete with a slide presentation.
“Some members have rallied to the charge of learning to meet online and found that not having to drive, dress up and go out has been a welcome change.
“When the club resumes its normal practice at the Club Hotel their Rotary meetings will be livestreamed so that those who sick or travelling can still join in at the local level.”
Yvonne is looking forward to being part of the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Central’s executive who are leading the way in community support.
