Bargara State School is is reviving its fete next month after a break of 10 years with Surfing Scientist Ruben Meerman the star attraction.

The turtle themed and environmentally focused fete will be held at Bargara State School from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, 19 October and will raise funds for school resources and infrastructure.

The Surfing Scientist, otherwise known as Ruben Meerman, will headline the entertainment program, and will appeal as much to the adults as the kids in the audience with high-energy demonstrations about the ocean and climate change.

Ruben is just as excited as the students, and said he is looking forward to “getting the locals pumped about science, and reminding them how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful spot with turtles and dolphins and whales at their doorstep.”

“I love to use science to WOW people and get my messages across,” Ruben said.

“Some of my favourite demonstrations include using liquid nitrogen to explain why the Earth has weather, dry ice to show people carbon dioxide, and a thermal imaging camera to demonstrate infrared light.”

The event is already generating much excitement among the school community and the Parents & Citizens Committee (P&C) is committed to delivering a big day out that is open to the whole community.

Principal Chris Norris said Bargara State School was looking forward to relaunching the fete in a way that gives back to everyone in the close-knit community.

“The Parents & Citizens Committee is led by a team of passionate and excited parents who have volunteered their time and expertise, and we have received overwhelming support from local businesses and community organisations,” he said.

A major raffle will be drawn at the fete and over 80 donations have already been received.

The prizes include a family adventure at Agnes Water; Lady Musgrave Experience tickets, a weekend at Cania Gorge Holiday Park, tickets to Serenades for Strings, restaurant vouchers, seafood vouchers, massage vouchers, hairdressing vouchers, gift packs and a three month gym membership.

The fete will also include a range of market stall on the day.

The Market Stall Co-ordinator is working with local Bargara artisans who will turn out especially for the event, and many of these stallholders have also committed to donating their profits to the school

Loggerhead Laneway will be filled with locally made pottery, jewellery, dried flower arrangements, art and so much more.

Not to be outdone, the students are also busy preparing, with each class holding their own stall.
