Nearly 50 life-saving defibrillators have been installed in the community and registered through the Bundaberg Defib Hero Community Activation program since the launch 12 months ago.

In November 2023 Bundaberg Regional Council became the first region in Australia to launch the Defib Hero program with Heart 180 founder Guy Leech to spur on uptake of installation and registration of defibs in the community.

The Defib Hero initiative is making strides in enhancing community safety as it aims to create a comprehensive network of accessible defibrillators throughout the region allowing residents and visitors to respond swiftly in cardiac emergencies.

Since its inception the initiative has garnered enthusiastic support from local businesses, organisations and residents who have recognised the critical role defibrillators play in saving lives.

Council Community Liveability, Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Cr Carmen McEneany said in the year since the program had launched nearly 50 defibrillators were now available for community use.

“We currently have 46 defibs logged on the Defib Hero app within the Bundaberg Region,” she said.

“We know there are more installed across the region and would like to encourage residents, businesses and organisations to register their device to allow everybody to know where to find a defib quickly in an emergency situation.”

Cr McEneany said by registering their devices through the Defib Hero app community members would contribute to a growing database that helped ensure everyone knows where to find a defibrillator when it mattered most.

“The app allows users to locate nearby defibrillators quickly, with real-time updates and clear navigation, significantly improving response times during emergencies,” she said.

“Defib Hero app is free and available for everybody to use, not just people here in the Bundaberg Region but across the whole of Australia.

“So far, we’ve had a number of local businesses and community organisations commit to the cause, including JRZ Homes owner Jesse Zielke who donated six life-saving defib machines to Council after attending an information session about Australian ironman legend Guy Leech’s Defib Hero Community Program.

“These defibs have been located throughout the region including at the Burnett Heads Boat Ramp Area, Theodolite Creek Park Grounds and Bargara Turtle Park.”

To participate in this life-saving initiative residents and businesses are encouraged to download the Defib Hero app and register any defibrillators they own.

“This simple action not only enhances the visibility of these crucial devices but also encourages a sense of community solidarity in promoting health and safety,” Cr McEneany said.

“The user-friendly interface of the app ensures that everyone, regardless of tech-savviness, can easily contribute to this important cause.

“As more devices are registered, the collective impact of the Defib Hero initiative will continue to grow, creating a safer environment for all.

“Let’s keep the momentum going—download the app and register your defibrillator today!”
