Residents are being encouraged to prepare for disaster season following a bushfire at Bucca and widespread storms which impacted the region yesterday.
On Thursday afternoon a fire ignited in bush between Birthamba Road, Bucca Road and Ten Mile Road, which prompted a large-scale response from rural fire services.
Bundaberg Rural Fire Brigade’s Dave Morton said crews from Avondale, South Kolan, Bingera-Weir, Burnett Heads, Booyan, Moore Park, Gregory River, Tirroan, and Bungadoo RFB attended the scene.
“Strong north winds pushed this fire to the south,” he said.
“We were able to burn into the west side of this fire off a narrow track.
“Rains started falling around 6 pm, but most burning was completed by then.”
Dave added that crews would continue to monitor the situation throughout the day.
Following the fire, a large storm front moved towards the region from inland.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the storm activity stretched from Rockhampton to Newcastle, triggered by a combination of weather factors.
“We have the tail end of a cold front brushing up the northern New South Wales coast, interacting with warm moist air from the north, generating showers and thunderstorms,” a Bureau spokesperson said.
“Today (Friday), the trough is expected to move away from the east coast.
“As we move into Saturday morning, patchy showers may persist, but the storm risk will decrease over the weekend.”
Several areas across Bundaberg recorded significant rainfall, with some locations receiving up to 62mm, according to local reports.
Rainfall totals included:
- Bundaberg South: 25mm
- Cordalba: 62mm
- Moore Park Beach: 38mm
- Kepnock: 28mm
- Avondale: 38mm
- Branyan: 27mm
