In a proactive move to address housing shortages in the region, Bundaberg Regional Council has adopted the There’s No Place Like Home – Bundaberg Housing Incentives Program.

The new strategy, part of the Bundaberg Local Housing Action Plan (BLHAP), aims to stimulate housing development by offering a range of incentives to developers.

The program seeks to respond to immediate and long-term housing challenges, while also managing the region’s steady growth.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the initiative reflected Council’s commitment to tackling housing affordability and providing pathways for developers to increase the local housing supply.

“The Bundaberg Region is growing and we need to ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable housing,” she said,

“‘There’s No Place Like Home’ delivers practical solutions to encourage developers to invest in our community and provide more homes for locals.” The strategy is set to deliver housing solutions through three key incentives:

Deferred payment of infrastructure charges

Developers of new residential subdivisions will be allowed to delay the payment of infrastructure charges for two years or until lots are sold, reducing upfront costs and making it easier for smaller developers to proceed with residential projects.

Incentivising infill residential development

The program encourages further development in existing urban residential areas by reducing application fees by 50% and cutting infrastructure charges in half for new infill housing.

This approach is designed to increase housing supply near employment opportunities, services and public transport.

Fast-tracking residential development

To accelerate housing delivery, a new Fast Track Housing Assessment Team will process applications for infill residential development within 10 days or less, and other residential development within 25 days.

Mayor Blackburn said the measures would make a tangible difference in the community.

“We know housing is a pressing issue, and this program is designed to deliver results quickly,” she said.

“By easing the financial and regulatory burden on developers, we can ensure more housing is delivered where it’s needed most, and we can support our community’s future growth.”

The “There’s No Place Like Home” program will commence on 1 October 2024 and run until 30 June 2025.

A review of its performance will be presented to Council before the closing date.

“We are committed to supporting housing solutions that work for everyone in our region,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“This is just one of the steps we’re taking to ensure Bundaberg remains a great place to live for all.”

Details of the program, including eligibility rules and application forms, are available on Council’s website here.
