The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has finalised designs for service roads on the Isis Highway, between Bundaberg Ring Road to Park Estate Drive, with construction expected to start in the coming weeks.
The works will help reduce the number of conflict points and provide safer access to the Isis Highway with new service roads that connect to key intersections.
It also features improvements to existing intersections to facilitate safer turning, accommodate additional traffic, and reduce the risk of rear-end crashes along the stretch of highway.
Pavement rehabilitation works will enhance rideability and reduce surface roughness.
Road widening will improve the separation between vehicles travelling in opposite directions, reducing the risk of head-on crashes.
TMR is delivering these works under the Queensland Government’s High Risk Roads program.
The Isis Highway High Risk Road program involves progressively designing and upgrading various sections of a 40-kilometre stretch of the highway.
The program includes a range of road improvements such as intersection upgrades, service roads, road widening, wide centre line treatments, audio tactile line marking installation, pavement rehabilitation and strengthening, and the removal of roadside hazards.
Construction of the upgrades has been occurring progressively.
Works are expected to get underway in the coming weeks and be completed by early 2026, weather and other conditions permitting.
Committed to cost effective road safety
Transport and Main Roads Regional Director, Southern Queensland Region, Bill Lansbury said TMR was committed to cost effective road safety initiatives to improve the safety of their transport network.
“These works are being funded under our High Risk Roads Program which is an initiative to address key safety concerns on the state-controlled network for larger routes,” Bill said.
“The construction of the service roads is expected to improve safety for motorists and residents adjacent to the highway, by reducing the number of potential conflict points.
“The introduction of service roads will also help preserve the function of the highway and improve traffic flow.
“We thank motorists for their patience during the upgrades.”
