Beach report: Clear and sunny days ahead

Oaks Beach
In this week’s beach report, Craig Holden says while the temperatures will still be quite cool, the coming days should be clear and sunny.

Well, it has certainly been a return to winter this week!

Temperatures have plummeted with plenty of chilly mornings and evenings but the sun has been shining during the day, the sky has been blue, the winds offshore, the ocean calm and clear, but not that may takers for a swim…

As we look ahead to the coming days, it looks like more of the same too, with maybe just the temperatures getting slightly warmer but still quite cool, although the days should remain clear and sunny!

This morning’s winds will be from the SW to S/SW at 10 to 15 knots before they start to ease during the day and swing more from the E/NE late this afternoon (5 to 10 knots).

Tomorrow will then bring W/SW winds through the morning at around 10 knots before they swing around to be from the N/NW through the afternoon.

Sunday’s forecast is for S/SW to E/SE winds at 10 to 15 knots.

Swimming

Just like the weather, the swimming conditions have been fantastic throughout this entire week, with those prepared to brave the cold finding plenty of calm and mild conditions.

Now in great news for swimmers, the forecast suggests that we should see more of the same over the coming days – with light to moderate offshore winds set to ensure the ocean remains mostly mild and calm again for the next few days, although there could be a little chop develop through the afternoons when the winds shift to be more onshore.

The best time for swimmers will be from early to mid/late morning, while the winds are offshore and the tide high.

All beaches should have mostly mild swimming conditions across the coming days, particularly while the winds remain mostly offshore, although Elliott Heads and Kelly’s Beach will be quite good through Saturday afternoon if those winds shift more form the N/NW.

Please check with the lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, and most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Surfing

This past week has provided nothing at all for board-riders with the ocean remaining flat and calm for the most-part right throughout this week, apart from a very small, clean wave on Monday morning.

Unfortunately too, the forecast is not looking great at all for the coming days either!

It really looks as though the ocean will remain calm and flat for the most part with nothing of significance expected in terms of waves.

For the SUP and ocean ski paddlers chasing a downwind paddle, Saturday afternoon may provide enough wind for a north to south run, while Sunday might be OK for a south to north run.

For those seeking a more relaxed and gentle paddle though, the beaches will be fine for this through the mornings with the offshore winds.
