Intricate details of red soil paddocks, rows of sugar cane, and beautiful beaches are expressed in Bundaberg Quilters collaborative piece View from Above, which has been generously donated to Bundaberg Regional Council.
Bundaberg Quilters members took inspiration for the award-winning abstract patchwork of colour from the landscape of the Bundaberg Region.
Bundaberg Quilters Inc members Carol Ann Ferguson and Sandra Sullivan co-ordinated the efforts of the collaborative piece with a total of eight members working on it.
“We wanted to make a quilt which represented the Bundaberg Region and we came up with an abstract quilt during the planning in 2021,” Carol Ann said.
“The inspiration was looking over the region from the top of the Hummock.
“You can see the greens, yellows and reds of the land.
“We called it View from Above and it has since toured in exhibitions around the country.”
Carol Ann said the quilt was one of the local club’s biggest achievements and, as it had a special meaning, the association wanted it to stay within the local community.
“Every second year our members make a collaborative quilt, which is donated to a local organisation to help them raise much needed funds,” she said.
“In previous years we’re donated quilts to local groups including Angels and the hospital foundation; we help sell tickets for the quilts to be raffled off and with this we raise anywhere between $2000-$3000 for these local groups.
“But this time we wanted to find the right home for this quilt, where everyone in the community could enjoy it.
“When I presented to Council recently we offered to donate it – there was such a lovely response from Councillors and we are proud it will stay within the local community as it represents the region.”
Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn and Deputy Mayor Tracey McPhee met with members of the Bundaberg Quilters to thank them for their donation.
“This is our region’s ‘patchwork quilt’ landscape beautifully recreated on a quilt,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“The award-winning piece was made by a collaboration of eight members. We’re going to proudly display it in the Council office building.”
