The winter night will light up for guests at this year’s Sugar Mill and Cane Fire Tours as part of the Childers Festival.
The Sugar Mill and Cane Fire Tours are a signature feature of the festival, providing attendees with a firsthand look at the traditional practice of cane burning, a method used to prepare sugar cane for harvest.
The tours offer an immersive experience, taking participants out to the fields where they can witness the dramatic sight of towering flames illuminating the night sky.
Ticket holders will experience the journey of sugar cane from crop to crystal on the popular, entertaining, and informative tour.
Childers Rotary has organised the Sugar Mill and Cane Fire Tours for the past eight years and President Peter Russo said it was always a fantastic fundraising opportunity for the local organisation.
Organised in collaboration with local cane farmers, the tours, which sell out each year, are not only a visual spectacle but also an educational journey as they listen to commentary from local cane farmers along the ride.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the history of sugar cane farming in the region, the importance of the cane burning process, and the modern techniques that ensure sustainability and safety.
Peter said the tour was one of the most anticipated events on the calendar and it promised to be an unforgettable experience, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s rich agricultural heritage.
“It’s definitely a unique experience which draws people in from all around the place as not many people have seen the ins and outs of a cane fire before,” he said.
“There’s a trip to the Isis Mill included, along with seeing a cane fire up close and a barbecue dinner – it’s really value for money!
“Childers Rotary has organised the event for eight years now and it’s our main fundraiser for the year.”
During each of the two Sugar Mill and Cane Fire Tours guest will enjoy the spectacle of modern harvesting at a cane farm, watch a locomotive hauling cane bins to the mill before stopping at various locations around the mill where the process of sugar cane production is explained.
They will then experience the spectacular sight of a cane fire, completed with a barbecue dinner at Childers Golf Club.
