Summer arrives at local beaches

summer temperatures beaches
In this week’s Beach Report, Craig Holden says warmer temperatures and muggy conditions will welcome summer at beaches this weekend.

Well, it has been yet another mixed week of weather conditions, with variable winds, periods of thunderstorms and rain, and warm and very muggy days.

As we look ahead to today and across the weekend, the forecast suggests more warm temperatures and muggy conditions to welcome summer, along with the chance of showers and scattered thunderstorms as well – although there will still be periods of sunny skies.

The winds will be from the N/NW for the next three days, with around 15 knots of N/NW winds today that will gust to 20 knots through the afternoon.

Tomorrow will then bring 15 to 20 knots of N/NW winds before Sunday brings a very slight drop in wind strength with around 15 knots of N/NW winds forecast.

Swimming

Swimming conditions have also been quite mixed as you would expect with the varying weather and wind conditions, with mild and calm conditions early in the week that have been replaced with choppy conditions.

Looking ahead to today and then into the weekend, we can certainly expect more choppy conditions in the ocean but particularly so on those beaches that face in a northerly direction.

These beaches will also have a side sweep or current running along from right to left as well.

The best beaches for swimmers over the next three days will definitely be both Kelly’s Beach and Elliott Heads due to their protection from the northerly winds.

The best times for a swim will be either in the very early mornings, or again from late morning to early afternoon.

Keep an eye out for blue bottles too with these northerly winds!

Please check with the surf lifesavers or lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages and most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach Patrols

Today: 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only.

Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Oaks Beach and Agnes Water, 1 to 5 pm at Elliott Heads and Moore Park Beach.

Sunday: 9 am to 5 pm at Elliott Heads, Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Oaks Beach, Moore Park Beach and Agnes Water.

Surfing

Calm and mild conditions were found in the early part of this week and there were a few small, clean waves about to enjoy as well.

Unfortunately though, the northerly winds have started to set-in and increase over the past 24 hours and they will continue into today and across the weekend as well, which means the likelihood of finding any quality waves will be quite slim.

Perhaps your best chance of finding something worthwhile will be to head to Kelly’s Beach and even Elliott Heads to try and grab a few small, fun mal waves.

Good luck!

Events

Good luck to those local surf lifesavers competing tomorrow at the Summer of Surf Hayden Kenny Classic at Alexandra Headland.
