Gentlemen invited to cook up a storm

Cooking up a Storm seniors Month

Community members will be cooking up a storm during Seniors Month with weekly classes held to encourage gentlemen to learn the basics in the kitchen.

Cooking up a Storm will have participants stirring and mixing their way through a number of recipes to help fill their freezers with some delicious meals.

Bundaberg Regional Council has partnered with Relationships Australia to offer the cooking classes for senior gentlemen during Seniors Month.

Relationships Australia’s Andrew Penney said he was excited to facilitate the classes and provide all the handy hints and tips to make any recipe a success.

“The concept is for us to create a dish each week and produce enough for the participants to take home portions which can be frozen and accessed as required,” Andrew said.

“This type of event helps to build community resilience or social capital which simply means creating and encouraging networks between community members.

“This translates into greater community cohesiveness and tends to empower the individual.”

Andrew said the cooking program was designed to foster community connections.

“Older gentlemen who might benefit from socialising and connecting with others in an activity-based environment,” he said.

“Fellows looking to upskill and have fun whilst also learning basic kitchen skills, cooking skills, and filling the freezer with some meals they might not normally prepare themselves.

“The emphasis will be on keeping the meals easy to make and delicious to eat.”

Bundaberg Regional Council Community Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Tracey McPhee said there was plenty of local activities on offer throughout Seniors Month and encouraged those looking to improve their skills in the kitchen to take part in Cooking up a Storm.

“Apart from cooking meals, the men will be cooking up camaraderie, laughter and lifelong memories,” Cr McPhee said.

“Cooking Up a Storm will empower our more mature men to bond over shared recipes and experiences.

“These free classes will inspire even the novice chef to go a little further when preparing their meals.

“Council has created a detailed Seniors Month calendar which brings together community events and activities throughout the Bundaberg Region.”

Cooking up a Storm is part of Queensland Seniors Month which provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people, facilitate community participation and enhance community connections.

Classes start 18 October and run for five Wednesdays, 5 pm to 7 pm at the Bargara Cultural Centre, with limited numbers available.
