Queensland Schools’ Championship Regatta returns to Bucca Rowing Centre for three days of rowing action from Saturday 16 September to Monday 18 September.

Bundaberg Regional Council has provided financial support of $12,500, as well as waste bin services, under its Partnerships and Sponsorships Program.

Over 800 athletes from approximately 50 schools across Queensland will converge on the region to compete in 250 races over 49 events in a weekend of intense competition.

The event is one of the largest regattas in the Queensland rowing calendar and is expected to attract a crowd of more than 3,000 spectators and participants.

Rowing Queensland’s Administration and Events officer Michelle Loveday said they were thrilled to be returning to Bucca for this year’s competition.

“We hold great excitement and anticipation for this event, recognising Bucca’s beautiful rowing environment and the warm hospitality of the Bundaberg community,” she said.

“The opportunity to showcase the talent and dedication of our rowers in such a picturesque setting is a source of pride for Rowing Queensland.

“Thanks to the relentless efforts of the Bundaberg Rowing Club, Bundaberg Regional Council, and the local community, the event promises to be a resounding success.”

Bundaberg Rowing Club’s Lyn McCarthy said the volunteer-run club were working hard to prepare for event.

“We have great volunteers who are doing 100s of hours of work to get the event together,” she said.

Lyn said the club planned to use the money earned throughout the weekend to upgrade their boat fleet and undertake maintenance work on the accommodation centre.

Major sponsors of the regatta are Bundaberg Regional Council and Rum City Foods, with more than 20 local businesses also supporting the event.

Mayor Jack Dempsey said the event would provide a boost of economic activity in the region.

“Council support of events like the Queensland Schools’ Championship Regatta is a recognition of the benefit such large events have on the community and our local economy,” Mayor Dempsey said.

“Having the competition at the start of the Queensland school holidays, it is anticipated that the average stay for visitors is five to six days, as participants and their supporters stay on to enjoy all that the region has to offer.”

Bundaberg Regional Council Sport and Recreation portfolio spokesperson Councillor Vince Habermann said the event would be an opportunity to witness a high level of competition.

“It is inspiring to see such talented young athletes come from around Queensland to row at Bucca,” Cr Habermann said.

“With the level of competition on offer, the community are in for an exciting three days showcasing some of the best young rowers in the state.”
