Bundaberg’s own Surfing Scientist Ruben Meerman is back with free public presentations to burst weight loss myths as part of the Eat, Breathe, Move program.
Ruben will be taking to the stage in Gin Gin, Bundaberg and Childers to talk about how the body gains and loses weight using his trademark blend of science and entertainment.
Eat, Breathe, Move is an initiative of the Building a Healthy Bundaberg Alliance program funded by the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, Health and Wellbeing Queensland and Bundaberg Regional Council.
The program aims to promote physical activity by recognising the connection between metabolism, breathing and movement and educating the community on how the food we eat becomes the carbon dioxide we exhale.
The Big FAT Myths presentations will connect the dots between the food we eat, the air we breathe and the digits on the bathroom scale.
Ruben said people could expect to walk away with their minds blown about how their bodies work.
“I’ve been fascinated by this chemistry for ten years, ever since I learned the answer,” he said.
“The answer is that the weight we lose turns into carbon dioxide which we then exhale, which most people will never learn in their lifetime.
“That’s why it’s such an important fact to teach people.
“No one realises that when you exhale, you’re breathing out your metabolised food as invisible carbon dioxide gas.”
Ruben said the presentations would focus on the biochemistry of nutrition and feature science demonstrations to deliver knowledge in a fun and practical way.
“This is for anyone who’s interested in their health and wellbeing,” he said.
“Anyone who wants to know how their body works or about nutrition, health, even maintaining body weight.
“It’s important because nothing that’s been done has had an impact on our obesity rate so I think it’s important that we each learn how our body works so that we can make better health decisions going forward.
“Come along, I promise to amaze people!”
