The Bundaberg Seniors Tennis Club is getting ready to serve up the 44th annual seniors tennis tournament at Drinan Park Tennis Centre from 4 to 6 August.
The competition is open to players aged 30 years and over and is a Tennis Seniors Australia (TSA) national ranking tournament with entries closing on 29 July.
Bundaberg Seniors Tennis Club Secretary Brett Gillard said the tournament was popular with players travelling last year in from New Zealand and one entry already from a player from the Northern Territory this year.
“Our members travel to tournaments across Queensland which in turn encourages players from those centres to travel to Bundaberg and play,” Brett said.
“Our tournament remains popular as Bundaberg provides a unique experience of playing on clay courts which over the years have disappeared from Queensland tennis clubs and have been replaced by artificial grass and hardcourt surfaces.”
Bundaberg Seniors Tennis remains popular
The Bundaberg Veterans Tennis Club (as it was then called) had its inaugural meeting on 14 September 1977 and the first Bundaberg veteran’s tournament took place on the Queen’s birthday weekend in 1979.
“The club currently has 35 members who actively play tennis midweek and on Sundays,” Brett said.
“We have members who are in their 30s right through to members in their 80s.”
Brett encouraged those who weren’t planning to pick up a racquet themselves, to still join in the fun and enjoy the event.
“Spectators are very welcome with food and refreshments available for the duration of the tournament,” he said.
