New Bundaberg Hospital build to start
Construction of the new Bundaberg Hospital will create more than 2,880 jobs providing a massive boost to the local economy.

Construction of the new $1.2 billion Bundaberg Hospital is set to start at the beginning of next year with completion expected by the end of 2027.

The build will create more than 2,880 jobs, providing a massive boost to the local economy.

The new Bundaberg Hospital will offer a range of improved and expanded services such as intensive care, coronary care, medical, surgical, paediatric, rehabilitation and mental health units.

It will also have an expanded emergency department and enhanced clinical support services.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced today CPB contractors would lead the design stage of the new Bundaberg Hospital.

“You’ll see early works happening here, construction underway, at the beginning of next year,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“This is big news for Bundy and the thousands of families who call this region home.

“Our government is delivering on our commitment to provide Queenslanders right around the state with better healthcare, closer to home.

“This new hospital will expand capacity in the Wide Bay Region while improving the availability of surgical, paediatric and mental health facilities for those who need it.

“But this investment isn’t just about bricks and mortar – it’s about creating more frontline nurse, doctor and allied health jobs for those who live and work in the region, while providing the care Queenslanders need.”

The $1.2 billion new hospital will deliver 121 new beds, extending capacity to the Wide Bay region, while supporting 2,880 jobs.

Design and enabling works will continue this year ahead of major construction in 2024.

The new Bundaberg Hospital is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027, weather and construction conditions permitting.

It is one of three brand new hospitals announced under the Health and Hospitals Plan for some of Queensland’s fastest growing communities.

Early works to establish access to the new hospital site via an extension of Johanna Boulevard, near Eggmolesse Street, were completed in March 2023.

New hospital is largest health investment in Wide Bay

Minister for Mental Health, Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman said $1.2 billion investment in the new Bundaberg Hospital is the largest health investment the Wide Bay region has ever seen.

“As the health needs of the Wide Bay community evolve at a rapid pace, this new hospital will ensure we can continue to provide the care they need now and into the future,” she said.

“Importantly, 121 new beds at the new Bundaberg Hospital means more people can receive care closer to home.

“CPB Contractors will partner across Queensland’s health system to bring the new Bundaberg Hospital to life through innovative and modern designs based on the principles of people, place, value and technology.

“Construction of the new Bundaberg Hospital will create more than 2,880 jobs providing a massive boost to the local economy.

“This new hospital will be designed to maintain flexibility, meaning spaces can be repurposed in the future to meet the changing healthcare needs of the community.”

Wide Bay Health and Hospital Service Chief Executive Deborah Carroll said they were thrilled to reach the important major milestone.

“This landmark project will transform Bundaberg and our surrounding communities, providing more beds and treatment spaces and enabling more people to receive more high-quality healthcare services closer to home,” she said.

“Our enthusiastic WBHHS staff – both clinical and non-clinical – are looking forward to working with CPB Contractors to progress this game changing project.”

Member for Bundaberg Tom Smith said it was a landmark announcement in the construction of the Wide Bay’s largest ever health infrastructure project.

“When completed, the new hospital will not only provide the highest quality of healthcare with additional services and strengthened university partnerships, it will also be one of the largest sites for creation of jobs and employment for Bundy locals.”
