End the Easter school holidays with friends and family and head along to the first-ever Hamfest hosted by Bundaberg Amateur Radio Club.
A Hamfest is a convention of amateur radio enthusiasts, which often combines a trade show, flea or car-boot market, and various other activities of interest to amateur radio operators.
The combined open day and Hamfest will showcase the exciting local hobby of amateur radio.
Bundaberg Amateur Radio Club secretary David Nebe, call sign VK4DN, said the group was excited to host its first ever Hamfest and it was the perfect way to end the holidays.
“This is our first really big event and we decided to do something special to celebrate World Amateur Radio Day,” David said.
“A Hamfest is like a car boot sale where people have tables like at the markets and sell radio and electronic equipment.
“This is to celebrate World Amateur Radio Day, and we will be demonstrating different types of radio transmitters and have a display of a satellite tracking system and demonstrations of Morse code sending and receiving.
“There is a lot of history with radio But today we are also able to operate the latest state-of-the-art radio equipment.”
David said there would be plenty of activities to spark an interest in both young and old.
He said children would be able to solder together a small electronic kit they could take home, find out information on how to obtain an amateur radio licence and a unique call sign, just like David’s VK4DN.
He said amateur radio had many features and the event would showcase something for everyone.
“This hobby has a lot of different aspects to it,” he said.
“The open day for us as members is like a show and tell, and we are all very excited to showcase our knowledge to the community, from kids to mums, dads, and grandparents.
“It’s definitely a hobby for all ages.”
