Gooburrum State School is going green with 500 native trees and shrubs to be planted over the next six months in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The Gooburrum State School and Council’s One Million Trees project team are working together on the Tree Planting for Forest Play and Outdoor Learning at Gooburrum State School project.

This project received funding from the Australian Government’s Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program.

After having to remove some trees that made up the forest section of the school in previous years, Principal Halli Cantrell said it was fantastic for students to be able to contribute back to the forest.

“About three years ago we had to have many trees removed because of safety issues so having the 500 trees will really rejuvenate the forest area,” Halli said.

“We are hoping to have all the trees planted in the next few months and then start the caring process.

“This is a wonderful project to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee and contribute to the one million trees project.”

Bundaberg Region Mayor Jack Dempsey said the project was fantastic for local students, who were given the opportunity to play their part in creating a beautiful space.

“The whole community get to benefit from this project, while the students have the privilege of planting a tree that someone will benefit from in the future,” he said.

“Through this activity, students also learn the importance of working together to achieve a great result for the community.

“A big congratulations to Gooburrum State School who continue to do great things in the community.”

Students who took part in the planting included school captain Stanley Marsh and student Emily Black.

Stanley said it was important for the students to be able to plant trees to assist with keeping the environment healthy while marking a special occasion.

“It feels amazing to plant trees and being able to plant 500 as a school is awesome,” he said.

“We have forest play so with more trees it would be better.

“I think it is very important for the environment to plant trees, it creates habitats for all sorts of insects and animals.”
