Bundaberg Library is encouraging the community to swap a gold coin for a book on Wednesday morning as part of The Great Book Swap.
The initiative, from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, aims to raise much-needed funds for remote communities to support the provision of culturally relevant books to children as part of Indigenous Literacy Day.
From 9.30 am until 11 am on Wednesday Bundaberg Library will host The Great Book Swap and is encouraging local readers to attend.
Council’s Arts, Culture and Events portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said it was great to see the library supporting initiatives to boost literacy skills in both the local community and remote communities across Australia.
“The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to get local community members reading to their children, as they will receive a book of their choice donated from the library’s collection in exchange for a gold coin donation,” Cr Learmonth said.
“Literacy skills are extremely valuable, and I am proud that we can play our part in providing opportunities for both our own and also remote communities to ensure they have access to books.”
The Great Book Swap has so far raised over $19,500 of their $100,000 goal.
About the Indigenous Literacy Foundation
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a national charity working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remote Communities across Australia.
They are community-led, responding to requests from remote communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice.
