Miriam Vale Magpies took a three-point lead in the race for the Northern District Rugby League Men’s Minor Premiership, coming from 10 points down inside the last 10 minutes to snatch a 34-32 victory from the jaws of defeat against a valiant Gin Gin Hawks.
Despite losing their best player Tim McIntosh to injury early on and having Ryan Gerahty sent off with 32 minutes to go in their penultimate round “Battle of the Birds” showdown at Tegege on Sunday, they still got the job done.
Wrecking ball front rower Cole Crawford bagged a double for the Magpies, but they will still have to win at least one of their remaining two games, against South Kolan Sharks at Gin Gin and Avondale Tigers at home to clinch the minor premiership.
Meanwhile, Avondale Tigers remain last of the four teams on the ladder despite bursting out of the doldrums with exhilarating centre Paea Teu cutting loose with four tries to spearhead them to a 34-22 home ambush of the Sharks on Sunday.
Erin Mitchell achieved the same feat for Avondale Tigerettes in the Women’s League Tag, scoring all of their four tries in a 24-4 blitz of Agnes Water Marlins.
In the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership, it was business as usual for Waves Tigers, continuing their outstanding form to notch their eighth straight victory with a 40-8 demolition of wooden spooners Wallaroos in their Round 14 showdown at Salter Oval on Saturday.
But they still will have to win their last two matches of the regular season against two times defending champions Past Brothers and Hervey Bay Seagulls respectively to clinch the minor premiership, after the Seagulls returned to their brilliant best on Saturday, breaking through for their first win in four games with a 60-0 whitewash of a much-depleted Wests Panthers at home at Stafford Park on Saturday.
For Wests, after being third on the ladder a few short weeks ago, they have dropped to fifth, now overtaken by sleeping giants Easts Magpies, who awoke from their slumber with a come-from-behind 26-16 triumph over the hot and cold Brothers in the later match at Salter Oval on Saturday night.
But for the Tigers, it took just two minutes for them to strike with no-frills hooker Mitchell Trims driving through under the posts, but Wallaroos stayed in the fight until half-time, trailing just 16-4 at the break, and while they never threw in the towel, Waves added a further four tries to one in the second stanza.
Brad Clarke, who was moved to the wing from five-eighth to accommodate the return of Jacob O’Shea from injury, and fellow Wests Panthers junior product and barnstorming second rower Lachlan Patterson each notched doubles, while centre Layton Chambers also continued his superb season, chalking up 16 points with one try and six conversions in a signature robust all-round performance.
For the Magpies, flashy centre Ratu Nawerecaqa, one of four recent Fijian recruits in the side, was among their try scorers and he took out the Railway Hotel Player of the Round, while two of his Countrymen were each also among the four-pointers, wing fliers Josateki Masibalavu and Aisake Masiwala.
Hockey
Riley Vowles was a match winner for Waves Cities I, completing a double to break a three-quarter time deadlock and clinch a 4-3 victory over a brave Raiders/Rovers in their Bundaberg Men’s clash at Hinkler Park on Saturday.
Cities established a 3-0 lead in the 21st minute, but Raiders/Rovers again proved themselves as legitimate challengers to the crown, drawing level with three goals in the space of 10 minutes in the third quarter, with Josh Crow opening their account, then striking again with the equaliser.
But the reigning premiers responded to the challenge, toughing out the win, although the result went right down to the wire.
Cities II however forfeited to All Blacks I, while Jake McCaig led the charge with a hat-trick of goals as Arrows/Athletics shot down All Blacks II 8-0.
Raiders/Rovers also triumphed in Division 1 Women, shutting out All Blacks 4-0 with Latoya Larsen featuring with two goals.
Arrows/Athletics also had a good win, with Bridget Stehbens a two-goal star as they accounted for struggling two-times defending champions Cities 3-0.

Reigning Golden Boot Nykodah Smith, fellow prolific scorer Bryce Hibberd and new talent Zach Nicholas each bagged hat-tricks of goals as hosts and reigning champions Across The Waves (ATW) outclassed Doon Villa, white-washing them 11-0 in their Football Queensland Premier League Wide Bay Men’s clash on Saturday,
But 2021 beaten grand finalists United Park Eagles (UPE) consolidated fourth place, four points ahead of Bingera after battling out an epic 1-1 draw with them in their Club and Sponsors Day at Martens Oval on Sunday.
However, despite fielding a bare 11 players, Bingera joined UPE in equal-fourth place in the FQPL WB Women’s League with a tough 2-0 victory over them at Martens Oval on Friday night.
