The Multiplex hosted top-level netball for the first time today when the state primary netball championships began with 12 teams competing.
Mayor Jack Dempsey opened the four-day carnival and welcomed competitors, parents and supporters to the Bundaberg Region.
“It’s fantastic to see them using the facilities as well as all the parents and supporters that come from right around the state to call Bundaberg home over the next four days,” Mayor Dempsey said.
“Sports are great to build communities but also are a great economic benefit as well so a big thank you to the Queensland School Sports Association.
“The Multiplex is a magnificent facility and what is does is attract great events like the state primary school championships to the Bundaberg Region and certainly we’re seeing the Multiplex being filled more and more and as the venue grows it brings more people to our region.”
First netball teams to play at Multiplex
Convenor Kellie Hansen said the state primary netball teams had travelled from as far as North Queensland to participate.
“We have the 12 regions from across Queensland; they’re all divided into their Education Queensland regions so as far away as Peninsula down into the Gold Coast areas,” Ms Hansen said.
She said hosting the championships in Bundaberg was a boost for local competitors.
“The girls are able to watch the girls that are playing sport regularly in such high competitions in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas and then they can aspire to be like those girls.
“However we are producing some amazing talent in regional Queensland as well.”
Ms Hansen said the teams were very excited to have the Multiplex as a venue and were looking forward to playing on this court in particular.
“The Multiplex is amazing. Everyone’s very excited to be playing on this court in particular, pretty sure it’s the first time we’ve actually played a game of netball in this arena and it’s exciting to be the first team to do so,” Ms Hansen said.
The carnival continues until Sunday, 23 June when the Queensland team will be announced.
