Looking ahead to the long weekend, Craig Holden says to expect more fantastic weather, with light winds, sunny skies and mild temperatures.
Weather
Well, it has been another fantastic week of weather across the local region, with light winds, sunny skies and mild temperatures – and even a slightly chilly start on Wednesday morning too!
Looking ahead to another long weekend, we can expect more of the same too, with light and variable winds forecast, along with mostly sunny skies and milder but warming temperatures – Sunday’s forecast suggests we are headed back to 30 degrees so be prepared for that one!
There is also the chance of a shower or two through today and tomorrow as well, so just keep an eye on the sky.
Today’s winds will be from the S/SE to E/SE at around 10 knots, before they ease by tomorrow with the forecast suggesting S/SW winds at around 5 knots in the morning that will swing from the E/NE through the afternoon at 5 to 8 knots.
Sunday will then bring W/SW to N/NW winds at 5 to 10 knots.
Swimming
Swimming conditions have been absolutely fantastic through this past week with the light winds producing clam and gentle swimming conditions on all beaches, with the water clarity improving every day.
As we look ahead to the coming long weekend, the forecast is once again looking first class for beach goers and swimmers, with more light and variable winds expected to keep the ocean calm and gentle for the most part – well, especially through the mornings anyway!
All beaches will have great swimming conditions over the long weekend, especially through the mornings when the ocean should be calm and glassy – but for Saturday and Sunday afternoon, you may find that Elliott Heads and Kelly’s Beach will be slightly better if the wind turns from the north.
Just be careful though as we approach the new moon on Monday night, with large high tide heights and very low low tides meaning there will be lots of water movement during the outgoing tide – particularly in those creek and river mouths.
Please check with the Lifesavers or Lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, AND most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Surfing
Local board-riders have not been greeted with too much wave action this past week, although the conditions have been calm and glassy, the wave heights have been very small and only really suited to the longboards and SUP’s.
The forecast for the long weekend is not looking much more promising either, with more of the same likely – generally calm and glassy through the mornings, with just some small, but clean waves likely that will again be bets suited to the longboards and SUP’s.
All beaches will be quite similar over the coming days with the mornings likely to be the slightly better time – if there is one! Good Luck.
For the SUP and Ocean Ski paddlers there won’t be much wind about over the long weekend for any fast downwind paddles, but for those chasing a more relaxed and gentler paddle, there will plenty of calm and glassy conditions at the beaches through the mornings over the coming days.
