Sunshine and blue skies for the long weekend

sunshine long weekend
In this week’s Beach Report, Craig Holden says it should be a great long weekend on local beaches.

Well, it has been a pretty good week of weather locally with plenty of sunshine and blue skies, moderate winds early in the week that then became light later in the week, and slightly cooler temperatures.

Looking ahead to today and then across the long weekend, the forecast is looking amazing for beach goers, campers and fisherman/boaties as well, with more sunshine and super-light winds the norm for the next four days!

It should be a great weekend for hitting the beach and having some fun!

The wind forecast for today, tomorrow and Sunday will be almost identical with 0 to 5 knots of W/SW winds through the mornings that will then swing more from the N/NE through the afternoons and increase to only 5 to 10 knots.

Easter Monday will be slightly different, with W/NW to N/NW winds at 5 to 10 knots.

Swimming

Swimming conditions have been ok during this past week, with choppier conditions about early in the week, but the swimming conditions have improved quickly since Wednesday when those winds eased.

Looking ahead to the Easter long weekend, if the forecast stays true and correct, it could well be one of the best Easter weekends in terms of weather and swimming conditions we have seen in quite a while!

Light winds are forecast for all four days, with super-light and offshore winds through the mornings, which will provide calm and glassy swimming conditions.

The winds will then turn onshore through the afternoons, but at only around 5 to 10 knots, the ocean should only get slightly choppy at worst.

Hit the beaches any time from early morning and through until around early afternoon for best results.

All beaches will have great swimming conditions through the mornings, but for the afternoons, Elliott Heads and Kelly’s Beach will be the picks.

Please check with the Lifesavers or Lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, and most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols:

Easter long weekend (all four days) – 9 am to 5 pm at Elliott Heads, Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Moore Park Beach and Agnes Water plus a rove lifeguard in the Bundaberg Region.

Weekdays (from Tuesday next week) – 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only.

Surfing

Local board-riders have again been enjoying plenty of clean and fun-sized waves this week, with last Sunday being a real treat for local board-riders, but the wave heights have started to drop since about Wednesday.

These wave heights will continue to be quite small over the coming days, but they should be super-clean with the light offshore winds through the mornings, so don’t write-off the chance of some small, but clean longboard waves or SUP waves from early to late morning across the Easter long weekend.

Best locations will likely be Agnes Water, Nielson Park Beach, Mon Repos and Moore Park Beach, but Kelly’s Beach and Elliott Heads could surprise through the afternoons.

Good luck.

For the SUP and Ocean Ski paddlers there won’t be much wind about over the long weekend for any fast downwind paddles, but for those chasing a more relaxed and gentler paddle, there will plenty of calm and glassy conditions at the beaches through the mornings over the coming days.
