Partners in Care Together is inviting the community to contribute to a yarn bomb display celebrating the work of local volunteers.
The squares will be displayed on the water tower near the Bundaberg Hospital to mark National Volunteer Week from 19 to 25 May under the theme ‘Connecting Communities’.
Community members are invited to crochet or knit squares no smaller than 15 by 15 cm in any colour and submit them by 10 May to be sewn together for hanging.
Participants can drop off their squares in bags at Café 641 at the Bundaberg Library or Thirst Aid Café at the Bundaberg Hospital to receive a free small coffee.
Partners in Care Together Foundation Manager Belinda Nunn said they encouraged people of all skill levels to get involved.
“It doesn’t have to be perfect as the squares will all be joined together,” Belinda said.
“Our volunteers run Café 641 at the library and would love to thank you for your squares by making you a free coffee.
“The aim is to cover the entire water tower with crocheted and knitted squares.
“It wouldn’t be possible without the space being made available by Bundaberg Regional Council.
“It’s an ambitious project but no matter how many squares are collected, it will be a spectacular sight.”
The water tower in Bundaberg West was selected as the location due to its visibility and proximity to the Bundaberg Hospital where Partners in Care Together has over 50 volunteers helping each week.
“Everyone has met a volunteer or been a volunteer themselves,” Belinda said.
“National Volunteer Week is all about connecting communities [and we] thought this was a perfect opportunity to show all volunteers in Bundaberg just how much we value them.”
