Steve Cooper has worn many different hats in service to the community but he’ll don a new one this April as he takes on the role of Bundaberg Regional Council Deputy Mayor.
Cr Cooper, who holds the Tourism, Airport and Information Technology Services portfolio and represents Division 8, was selected to hold the role for 12 months from April 2025 by his fellow Councillors.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said following last year’s election the new Council had made a decision to have the role of Deputy Mayor reviewed every 12 months.
“This provides the opportunity for greater experience in this leadership role across our cohort of elected members and shares the added responsibility,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“I congratulate Cr Cooper on his appointment to the role and thank Cr Tracey McPhee for her dedicated service as Deputy Mayor for our first year of this Council term.”
Cr Cooper has been a resident of the Bundaberg Region for 45 years, first moving to manage Reid’s before taking over as retail manager of Buss and Turner.
After 25 years in the hardware industry, during which time he held a position as national chair of the hardware group’s marketing and management sector, and many years serving as a Rotarian, he took the plunge into Local Government.
He was first elected to Council in 2018 and is now looking forward to continuing to serve the community and Council as Deputy Mayor.
“I thank my fellow Councillors for their trust in me by appointing me to the position of Deputy Mayor through a democratic process.
“I would also like to recognise Cr Tracey McPhee for her contribution in the past 12 months, she did a wonderful job and hopefully I can be at least equal to it.”
