Annual Lenten soup night

Preparing for last year’s Lenten soup night.

Bundaberg’s Christ Church Anglican Parish invites the community to join them for their annual Lenten soup night, fundraising to support the Parish Soup Kitchen.

Howard Kingston shares all about the event and what can be expected:

Can you provide an overview of the event and what inspired you to organise it?

The event started almost 30 years ago with an idea to have a basic meal of soups during the Christian “fasting” season of Lent and, at the same time, to fundraise to support our Parish Soup Kitchen, which provides a major service by feeding the hungry in our city and district.

The idea came from Tony Osborn, now a centenarian in his 102nd year.

He has continued to be an inspiration for this event and up until two years ago was still leading members of the Anglican Men’s Society to organise this event.

Now, its organisation is a joint effort between the Anglican Men’s Society and the Anglican Mother’s Union.

What are the main activities or highlights attendees can look forward to?

In essence, we aim to provide a simple meal during Lent and use the profits generated from the event to help support the Parish Soup Kitchen.

There will be a variety of soups available, all home-made by church members, and our regional Bishop, Sarah Plowman, will also be in attendance as a guest speaker.

How do you envision this event benefiting the local community?

The community will benefit by supporting the Parish Soup Kitchen which feeds people who might not be able to provide for themselves.

Are there any local businesses or organisations partnering with you for this event?

This event is run at minimal cost by generous volunteers from the Bundaberg’s Christ Church Anglican Parish.

Updates about the event will be available through the Bundaberg Anglican Parish Facebook page or by contacting the Parish office directly on 07 4151 3128.

How do you hope attendees will feel after participating in the event?

We hope that, on leaving, attendees will feel that they have been well fed, both in quantity and quality of the food, and that they will appreciate that they have been part of supporting a good charitable cause.

Finally, we hope that they have enjoyed good company as well as the message of the guest speaker.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the community about this event?

Unfortunately, Tony Osborn is unlikely to attend this year due to health reasons.
