Bundaberg Regional Council has decided not to proceed with a proposed bin inspections and tagging program.
Council had received full State Government funding for the activities which were part of the Let’s Get It Sorted campaign.
While conducting bin audits is business as usual for Council Mayor Helen Blackburn said following a full briefing on the Let’s Get It Sorted bin tagging campaign, Councillors believed it was not necessary for it to continue.
“Council was provided a full briefing today about the bin tagging exercise that was reported on last week and in that meeting Councillors decided that that we would not be proceeding with this campaign,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“We absolutely heard that the public were not in favour of this idea and certainly all councillors got to have their say around the table today.
“The concerns from the Council’s perspective is this is something that we’re doing in any case.
“We’re already checking with cameras on what’s going out of those bins.
“So we do have a monitoring program in place already and we saw this as superfluous.”
Council will continue its usual waste education and awareness activities.

Other news:
As I understand it, the program is fully funded by the Queensland Government and already 26 Councils have been funded. Being Government funded would mean money to Council and more money to Impact. The bin tagging program is all about educating the public to do the right thing in regards to recycling. We must recycle otherwise all the resources that went into making the article just end up in a hole in the ground and this is just wasteful and unconscionable.
We need to be educated to recycle better. Let’s face it, better and more recycling will make a cleaner and greener environment which is what we all desire and need.
