Campbells celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

70th Wedding Anniversary - Desmond & Shirley Campbell
Desmond and Shirley Campbell celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on 12 February 2025.

Desmond and Shirley Campbell have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by friends and family.

Here’s what Shirley had to say about their seven decades of marriage:

Tell us about your family?

We got married at Bega in NSW.

We had a very small wedding and had three kids within the five years.

Des was an only child and I was one of 13.

So I pulled him into gear quick.

We have three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

We’ve had a good life; we’ve had our ups and downs as anybody does.

We battle through and that’s the only way you can do it.

How did you celebrate?

The night went off really nice, we had something like 44 people there.

We had Danny English entertainment, it was lovely.

What is the secret to 70 years of marriage?

It’s all give and take, that’s the only way you’ll get through.

You can’t have it all your own way.

You’ve got to be able to give it and you’ve got to be able to take it.

Desmond and Shirley were congratulated by Mayor Helen Blackburn.

Why did you move to Bundaberg?

It just seemed to appeal to me while I was still working and the weather.

I lined up all the papers and was looking at the cost of housing, Brisbane, Cairns.

Bundaberg was much cheaper and that’s why we came up here.

You know Bundaberg is a big place, it’s grown since we moved up here 33 years ago.

What has been a favourite memory from your time together?

Having the three kids has been a blessing.

Probably the first birth, when our son was born.

What do you love about each other?

He’s easy to please with food, I make him about 30 servings of soup to have for lunch each day.
