Clean Up Australia celebrates 35th year

After a record number of groups joined forces to clean up the Bundaberg Region in 2024, Clean Up Australia Day registrations are now open, with events taking place from 25 February.

Clean Up Australia Day is fast approaching and Bundaberg Region residents are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and make a difference in the community.

This year marks 35 years of Clean Up Australia bringing communities together to clean up and help to improve and conserve our environment.

Registrations for the annual event, held on Sunday 2 March, have now officially opened with school teams, businesses, community groups and individuals urged to sign up to tackle litter and waste.

Last year saw the highest number of Clean Up Australia Day registrations in the Bundaberg Region, with 49 groups, beating the record set in 2023 of 38 groups.

Clean Up Australia Chair Pip Kiernan said they are hoping to rally as many Aussies as possible to continue her father’s legacy and make it the biggest year of action to date.

“Nothing makes us prouder than to see communities from all walks of life and generations coming together with a common goal of making a difference for our precious environment,” Pip said.

“Clean Up Australia has a rich history of mobilising Australians to take practical action to clear up the mass amount of litter and waste that makes its way into our beautiful waterways and other natural surroundings.

“We know that 35 years on from when my father, Ian Kiernan, started this iconic organisation, our fight against litter is nowhere near over, but we also know that as a society we need to shift our habits to consider litter prevention and best practice to stop it from entering our environment in the first place,” she said.

Registrations for Clean Up Australia Day 2025 are now open with volunteers receiving a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families and community groups available.

Last year, Clean Up Australia Day participants collected an estimated 140,000 bags of litter nationally.

“Nothing makes us prouder than to see communities from all walks of life and generations coming together with a common goal of making a difference for our precious environment,” Pip said.
