Millions of bins were serviced and many tonnes of materials recycled in a year that saw Bundaberg Regional Council reinforce its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible waste management.
In the past 12 months (November 2023 – October 2024), Council’s kerbside bin collection service handled almost 3 million bin lifts, including 2,131,146 waste bins and 845,649 recycling bins.
The Material Recovery Facility – operated by Impact Community Services – hand sorted and recycled 3,700 tonnes of materials – equivalent to the weight of 2,500 cars – highlighting the community’s dedication to recycling efforts.
In e-Waste recycling, 200 tonnes of electronic waste was diverted from landfill between January and October 2024, while 4 tonnes of household batteries (the leading cause of fire in garbage trucks and landfill) were responsibly recycled at dedicated drop off points.
Mattresses, another significant waste stream, were not overlooked, with 7,141 mattresses disposed of and managed effectively through Council facilities.
Domestic mattresses of any size were also made free to dispose of at all Council waste facilities.
Council’s Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) trial concluded in late 2024.
Over 600 tonnes of organic material – equivalent to 66 garbage trucks – was composted during the trial with less than 2% contamination.
This resulted in a 51% reduction in landfill waste for trial participants.
