Cameron Street in Bundaberg North was named for WWII soldier Burnett Cameron in 1951.

Bundaberg North’s Cameron Street now displays the Australian Army Rising Sun badge in honour of Gunner Burnett Cameron under Bundaberg Regional Council’s Streets of Remembrance program.

Cameron Street was named for Burnett Ronald Cameron in December 1951.

Burnett was born in Bundaberg in 1913 to John Joseph and Mary Jane Cameron.

He married Mary Pershouse on 12 February 1937 and the couple had one daughter.

He was working as a stockman at the time of his enlistment in the Australian Army on 16 June 1940, aged 27 years.

Burnett served in the 2/10th Field Regiment during World War II as a member of the Royal Australian Artillery.

He undertook training in Enoggera and Caloundra before disembarking from Sydney on 2 February 1941 bound for Singapore on transport ship HT QX1 Queen Mary.

Burnett fought in Malaya and was wounded in battle on 5 February 1942 with injuries to his abdomen and right arm.

He was admitted to 2nd/4th Australian Casualty Clearing Station but died of his wounds the same day.

Burnett was 29 years old.

For his service, Burnett was awarded the 1939/45 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal and Australian Service Medal.

A memorial scroll was issued to his next of kin, along with a memorial letter from the King.

He is buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore, and his grave bears the inscription ‘No morning dawns/No night returns/But that we think of you’.

Gunner Burnett Ronald Cameron is remembered on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, Bororen Memorial Courts, Bororen War Memorial, and Miriam Vale War Memorial.
