Community to bring in New Year in Lions Park

NYE Fireworks: Mayor Helen Blackburn with sponsors of this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks event.

The banks of the Burnett River will dazzle and delight as the community comes together to celebrate New Year’s Eve with businesses providing $37,500 in sponsorship support.

Plans for Council’s NYE event are well underway with Lions Park set to come alive from 6.30 pm with entertainment and food trucks.

Local acts The Spargo Brothers, Marah Leigh and The Go To’s will get the party started and two fireworks displays will light up the sky including a family display at 8 pm before the traditional midnight display to ring in the New Year.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the entire community was welcome to join in the celebrations.

“Let’s celebrate all of the things we achieved in 2024 and as a community come together to mark a positive beginning to 2025,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“Thank you to our incredible sponsors for making this celebration possible.”

NYE sponsors make community celebration possible

The high level of sponsorship means Bundaberg Regional Council can host the return of the celebrations with a much-reduced financial contribution from its Christmas program budget.

Mayor Blackburn said it was a fantastic result and demonstrated Council’s commitment to continuing to deliver for its community while reducing the financial burden on ratepayers wherever possible.

“New Year’s Eve fireworks are a much-loved community tradition and we are so excited to be bringing them back with an incredible amount of support from the local business community,” she said.

“We had hoped to deliver the NYE event with no financial contribution from Council however $30,000 in financial sponsorship and $7,500 in in-kind contributions is a wonderful result at a time when businesses are also feeling the pressures of the increases in costs.

“Combined with the revenue received through the Christmas program budget this has resulted in a significant offset which means we can forge ahead with this great event.”

Mayor Blackburn said the financial impact on the community for Council’s Christmas program had already been significantly reduced earlier this year when it was halved from the $250,000 budgeted in 2023.

“We’re listening to our community and what we’re hearing is that Pageant of Lights needs to remain the cornerstone of our Christmas program and residents were asking for New Year’s Eve celebrations to return.

“That’s why we’ve reduced our spend from last year while still delivering what our community wants.”
