A special friendship has lit up Christmas for the whole Bundaberg Region at the annual turning on of the Christmas lights in Buss Park.
Friends Amarlie Lyons and Charlotte Haak flipped the switch with Mayor Helen Blackburn, delighting the large crowd that had gathered for the event.
Charlotte’s mum Larissa Haak said the girls’ friendship developed in the Paediatric Ward at Bundaberg Hospital where they both went through the same Leukaemia treatment.
“Marnie [Gall, Amarlie’s mum] made contact with me when she found out there was another little girl going through the same Leukaemia treatment as her daughter,” Larissa said.
“They have been through some tough treatment over the last two years, and it’s been good to see them connect so well.
“They know what each other is feeling and going through and hold that special bond from this journey they’ve been on together.”
Marnie said she was so proud Amarlie and Charlotte had been chosen to turn on the Christmas lights.
“What’s special about their friendship is that Amarlie will always be there for Charlotte as they have been through so much being brave,” Marnie said.
“Christmas means to me enjoying family time, love and laughter, also to see the children’s faces light up when Santa’s been.”
Larissa said she hoped the Christmas lights would bring a touch of magic to people going through difficult times.
“There is just something magical about the sparkling of Christmas lights that I hope will bring joy and happiness to everyone,” she said.
“It’s a time to unite with family and friends, creating memories with Christmas traditions.”
Amarlie and Charlotte said they were looking forward to spending time with their family at Christmas, and opening presents.
“I’m excited to turn the town [lights] on in front of all my friends and family,” Amarlie said.
And the best part about turning on the Christmas lights?
“Turning the lights on with my friend Amarlie and seeing everyone’s faces light up with excitement,” Charlotte said.
Bundaberg Regional Council Christmas lights will be on display in Buss Park every evening throughout December.
To all concerned…
What a great choice for turning on the lights! Well done.
