Summer starts on local beaches

Beach report
In this week’s beach report, Craig Holden says it will be the official start of summer this weekend so expect it to start getting busy on local beaches.

Well, the start of summer officially arrives this Sunday and the start of school holidays are not far away either, so we can expect the crowd numbers to increase across our local beaches over the coming weeks!

This past week has brought pretty good weather conditions too, and fingers crossed the coming days will be quite similar, although the forecast is suggesting an increased chance of showers from Saturday into Sunday so keep an eye on the sky when planning your trip to the beach across the weekend!

This morning’s winds will be light and from the East at only 5 to 10 knots before they swing from the E/NE through this afternoon and increase to 10 to 15 knots.

Saturday and Sunday are then forecast to be quite similar with N/NE winds at around 10 to 15 knots on both days.

Swimming

Swimming conditions have been quite good throughout this past week thanks to the lighter winds, and as we look ahead to the coming days, the wind forecast is also looking quite favourable with the general pattern being lighter winds through the morning (along with high tides) and then moderate winds through the afternoons that will whip up some chop on the ocean surface.

With this in mind, all beaches should provide good swimming conditions through the very early mornings over the coming days, but after that Elliott Heads and Kelly’s Beach will be by far the better options for swimmers while the winds remain from the north.

Beaches that face in a more northerly direction will be slightly choppier, and these beaches will also have a slight sweep or current pushing across the beach from left to right.

Please check with the lifesavers or lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, and most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols

Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Oaks Beach and Agnes Water, 1 to 5 pm at Elliott Heads and Moore Park Beach.

Sunday: 9 am to 5 pm at Elliott Heads, Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Oaks Beach, Moore Park Beach and Agnes Water only.

Weekdays (including today): 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only.

Surfing

Local beaches have provided plenty of fun waves through this past week, and particularly through the early part of the week with the early mornings providing plenty of fun.

The wave heights have dropped away though over the past day or two, and it appears they whilst they will increase slightly over the coming days, the NE winds will probably mean that the wave quality will not be fantastic.

Early this morning will be worth a look at Nielson Park, Agnes Water, Mon Repos or Moore Park, before the winds turn NE but then across the weekend your best options may well be to head to Kelly’s Beach or even around the old mouth of the Elliott River in the hope of finding some cleaner long-board waves.

Good Luck!

Events

The Queensland Interbranch Championships are being held tomorrow on the Sunshine Coast – good luck and best wishes to our local surf lifesavers that are competing and representing the Queensland Country Team!
