Turtle season begins with driving reminder

It’s officially turtle breeding season and Bundaberg Regional Council is reminding visitors to Moore Park Beach of new night-time driving restrictions in place from tonight.

The dusk-to-dawn vehicle closure aims to protect nesting turtles and ensure the safety of volunteers who monitor the nests.

This measure follows a successful trial last season that saw strong community support.

From 1 November to 31 March each year, vehicles will only be allowed on the beach during daylight hours.

Outside of turtle season, normal access will resume.

It comes as the bells rang on Thursday to symbolise the beginning of turtle season in the region, which impacts a majority of local beaches.

According to Queensland National Parks, the first turtles had already made their way to shore at Mon Repos on Saturday 19 October.

“Flatback T53179 was first ashore at 8.30pm, in her ninth breeding season, having first nested at Mon Repos back in 1990, so she would be over 60 years of age,” the Facebook post reads.

“Flatback QA43165 nested after midnight.

“This is her fifth breeding season, estimated to be in her 40s, she first nested in 2013.”

The official season runs from November to March each year.
