Massey Street in Bundaberg East was named after Sapper John James Massey in July 1951 and it has been included in Bundaberg Regional Council’s Streets of Remembrance program.
John Massey was a resident of Booyal, near Childers, when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942.
Sapper Massey served in the 59 Corps Field Park Company during the Second World War.

According to the Australian Army, a Sapper is a rank in the structure and defines a soldier or officer’s role and degree of responsibility.
The Australian War Memorial’s Roll of Honour states Sapper Massey died on 9 November 1943 in New Guinea with the cause of death listed as illness.
His name is located at panel 25 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Streets of Remembrance program
Bundaberg Regional Council’s Streets of Remembrance program honours local veterans by adding their badge of service to the streets named after them.
The initial launch of the program at the end of 2023 saw 30 streets identified and it had more than doubled in the first six months.
Community members are encouraged to nominate future street name suggestions as well as help to identify existing streets already named after veterans to be included in the program.
Applications are available through the Council website here and will be assessed as specified within the project guidelines.
