Upcycled plastic has given the Botanic Gardens boardwalk a new and longer-lasting life with the upgraded materials also being easier to maintain.
Mayor Helen Blackburn welcomed the opening of the much-anticipated replacement boardwalk.
“The Botanic Gardens boardwalk is a popular destination for families, wildlife enthusiasts, residents and visitors alike,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“The timber materials previously used for its construction had reached the end of its life with the area having been closed for public safety for some time now.
“Like many residents who have been anxiously waiting I am pleased to see the boardwalk reopened with a new and improved structure made from upcycled plastic materials.”
By utilising plastic composite, which includes recycled plastics, the new boardwalk will feature a timber look while having the added benefits of being more durable against animal droppings and weather events, reducing maintenance requirements.

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said using specialised materials was essential for the Botanic Gardens boardwalk upgrade project.
“This area is wet all the time and undergoes regular maintenance,” Cr Bartels said.
“That’s why it’s so crucial we get the materials right, with the use of plastic composite and specialised hardwood timber.
“Unfortunately, the availability of materials combined with the need to close sections of the boardwalk for safety reasons necessitated a lengthy closure.
“However, I have no doubt the community will be very pleased with the outcome.”
They encouraged community members to enjoy the new boardwalk for themselves.
“There is much to see and enjoy in the Botanic Gardens, from the plants and animals to the wonderful co-located facilities, a steam train ride and a trip to the café,” Mayor Blackburn added.
