The animals at Alexandra Park Zoo are living happy and healthy lives according to the latest Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) accreditation received by Bundaberg Regional Council.
The popular attraction has officially been awarded the prestigious accreditation, showcasing the zoo’s commitment to animal care, conservation and community engagement.
The process is a rigorous one, with strict guidelines ensuring that member zoos and aquariums meet the highest standards of welfare, education, and environmental sustainability.
Council’s Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said Alexandra Park Zoo’s recognition highlights its ongoing efforts to enhance the wellbeing of its animals.
“Animal welfare isn’t just about physical condition but focuses on an animal’s overall quality of life,” he said.
“Our staff at Alexandra Park Zoo care deeply for every animal and their health and wellbeing is always a priority.”
ZAA accreditation asks the question, is the animal having a fulfilling life of positive experiences?
To ensure this is the case, each animal within the zoo is assessed under the Five Domains Model:
1. Nutrition: Ensuring animals are all well hydrated and have access to a balanced, nutritious and varied diet.
2. Environment: Understanding the environmental needs of each animal that influence their natural sensory responses, to provide a habitat where they can feel at home.
3. Health: Supporting animals’ physical health through regular check-ups and veterinary care, to ensure that they stay in great condition.
4. Behaviour: providing opportunities for our animals to engage in natural behaviours like play, courtship and foraging.
5. Mental: Understanding, based on the assessment of the other four domains, the various emotions and sensations that make up the mental state of each animal.
At Alexandra Park Zoo the criteria is met through a number of initiatives including providing the animals with enrichment activities such as changing the way food is presented.
Cr Bartels acknowledged the significance of ZAA accreditation achievement for the local community.
“This recognition not only assures the community that our animals are receiving the best possible care but also connects us with a broader network of accredited institutions working together to protect endangered species and preserve biodiversity,” he said.
“Alexandra Park Zoo has always been a beloved part of Bundaberg, and this accreditation will strengthen its role as an educational and conservation hub for visitors and schools across the region.”
