Local environmental advocate Elijah Richardson has been awarded third place in the Action for Nature (AFN) International Young Eco-Hero Awards.
The 11 year old was honoured for his unwavering dedication to protecting the Great Barrier Reef and promoting ocean conservation, making him a beacon of inspiration for youth activism worldwide.
Growing up in Bundaberg, Elijah developed a deep connection with the ocean and its delicate ecosystems.
His passion for marine life, particularly the Great Barrier Reef, ignited a desire to protect these natural treasures from environmental threats.
Elijah’s advocacy efforts are extensive and impactful.
As the first youth ambassador for the CoralWatch Ambassador Program and a member of the Tangaroa Blue Ambassador Program, he has honed his knowledge of marine conservation and gained the tools to make a difference.
Through engaging social media content, impactful presentations at schools and community events, and compelling videos, Elijah urges individuals and communities to take action for the planet.
He also regularly organises and participates in beach clean-ups, leading by example in the fight against plastic pollution.
Elijah’s dedication has earned him recognition in prominent media outlets, including ABC’s ‘War On Waste’ series, and his video message to musician Billie Eilish resulted in the use of her song ‘Ocean Eyes’ for the CoralWatch ‘Eyes on the Reef’ campaign, amplifying awareness for the cause.
While visiting California, Elijah plans to connect with the AFN board in person, potentially at the California Academy of Sciences, to further discuss his work and explore opportunities for collaboration.
AFN President Beryl Kay said Elijah’s commitment to protecting the Great Barrier Reef and advocating for ocean conservation was a testament to the power of youth leadership.
“His story serves as an inspiration to young people everywhere, demonstrating the impact they can have on safeguarding our planet’s future,” Beryl said.
AFN is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering young people to take action for the environment.
Through its awards programs and educational initiatives, AFN recognises and supports the next generation of environmental leaders.
