Shade on the way for local parks

More shad is on the way for Elliott Heads Recreational Precinct.

Five parks will have more shade in 2024 with work now underway to install structures at the popular Elliott Heads Recreational Precinct.

It follows last month’s installation of shade at Apple Tree Creek Community Park playground with Gorman Park, Burnett Shores Park at Burnett Heads and Innes Park Reserve next on the list.

Bundaberg Regional Council’s Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said providing shade at recreational facilities would promote community safety.

“When the Elliott Heads Recreational Precinct was designed there were large trees close to the facility which would have provided natural shade, unfortunately these trees were damaged in a storm and required removal prior to the facility being constructed,” Cr Bartels said.

“Shade is crucial in reducing the risk of sunburn and heat-related illnesses, particularly in areas like recreational facilities, where people are active for extended periods.

“These new structures will not only provide protection but also ensure that park users can enjoy the facility comfortably throughout the day.”

The cantilever design of the shade structures has been selected for its durability, making it an ideal fit for the coastal skatepark, which is subject to high winds.

The installation process began on Tuesday 1 October and is set to take two weeks, weather permitting.

Small sections of the area will be closed during this time while the rest of the park remains accessible.

The community is advised that there may be some noise pollution from excavation works.

Bundaberg Regional Council apologises for any inconvenience.
