Beach report: mixed swimming conditions ahead

Beach report
In this week’s beach report, Craig Holden says there will be mixed swimming conditions this weekend with mostly light winds and sunny skies.

Well, it has been another great week of weather across the local region with mostly sunny skies, light to moderate but variable winds, and mild temperatures – with even a couple of cooler mornings once again.

As we look ahead to today and across the weekend though, we can expect slightly warmer temperatures again, along with the chance of a shower or two through today but more likely tomorrow, and light to moderate northerly winds that will then become light and variable by Sunday.

Today’s winds will be from the N/NW at around 10 to 15+ knots, and then almost identical through tomorrow as well.

Sunday will then bring lighter but variable winds at around 10 knots – they will be from the S/SW early before swinging E/SE and then E/NE by late afternoon.

Swimming

This past week has brought mixed swimming conditions, with milder conditions for the most part and certainly through the mornings, before choppier conditions tended to develop through the afternoons.

The coming days are set to bring mixed conditions for swimmers though, with both today and tomorrow bringing choppy conditions on all those beaches that are exposed to the northerly winds – but Elliott Heads and Kelly’s Beach will be the opposite, and will be sensational for swimmers, particularly through until about midday to early afternoon on both days.

Sunday will then bring good swimming conditions to all beaches with the winds becoming light and variable by then – and the better conditions on Sunday will be from mid-morning to early afternoon.

Please check with the lifesavers or lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, and most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols

Today and weekdays: 9 am to 5 pm at Elliott Heads, Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Oaks Beach, Moore Park Beach and Agnes Water plus a rove lifeguard in the Bundaberg Region.

Saturday and Sunday: 9 am to 5 pm at Elliott Heads, Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park Beach, Oaks Beach, Moore Park Beach and Agnes Water plus a rove lifeguard in the Bundaberg Region.

Surfing

This past week has not provided a great deal of action for local board-riders, with only small, clean waves about to try your luck on through the mornings before the choppier conditions arrived later in the day.

The forecast for the weekend is not too much better either unfortunately, with northerly winds not likely to bring too much joy today or tomorrow – but maybe consider looking at Kelly’s Beach or Elliott Heads for a cleaner wave on the longboards.

Sunday will have better wind conditions for the surfers, so maybe also think about checking out the other locations by then in the hope of a small, clean wave.

Good Luck.

For the SUP and ocean ski paddlers chasing a downwind paddle, both today and tomorrow will provide plenty of fun for a north to south downwinder, but for those chasing a gentler and milder ocean paddle, wait until early Sunday morning for the best conditions, or else try Elliott Heads or Kelly’s Beach today or tomorrow morning.
